Lançou o criticamente aclamado álbum Ready To Die em 1994, e se converteu na principal figura do rap da Costa Leste dos E.U.A. que tanto rivalizava com a Costa Oeste do país, que era liderada pelo brilhante rapper Tupac Shakur. A carreira de B.I.G. estava marcada pelas contínuas disputas entre as gravadoras Bad Boy Records e Death Row Records, quando B.I.G. foi apontado supostamente como o indiretamente responsável pela morte de Tupac Shakur (2Pac), no dia 7 de Setembro de 1996, porque em uma de suas letras revela que teve relações sexuais com a esposa de B.I.G., que morreria 6 meses depois da morte de Tupac, no dia 9 de Março de 1997, em circustâncias parecidas. B.I.G. é lembrado até hoje como uma lenda do hip hop. Seu disco duplo Life After Death, lançado pouco depois de sua morte, é um dos maiores álbuns de hip hop da história, com 26 milhões de cópias vendidas.
